Texas Republican National Committeewoman Denise McNamara had some important
things to say regarding the Martinez election here and here.
Some highlights, along with my comments
[M]embers of the Republican National Committee are expected to assimilate. Any independence
of thought or opposition to leadership is seen as unacceptable. The RNC has become the Borg. Resistance
is futile. You will be assimilated.
The top-down leadership of the RNC attempts to squelch individuality. Most members do not
publicly express their true thoughts because, just as with the Borg, resistance will be
punished. Few are willing to vote against the majority because that could mean the loss of a committee position or the prospect of future retaliation.
The 110 people holding these offices are not exactly a nest of revolutionaries.
To win one of the only two statewide RNC seats generally requires years of hard
work, patience and a willingness to swallow your tongue. Once in place, an RNC Committeeman can enjoy the
post literally for decades (at least in states without term limits). If you think I am kidding, take
a moment to review this Excel spreadsheet.
Consider also that any Republican National Committeeman elected from 1989 until 1992 and from at least 1998 until
now attained office during a Bush presidency (or a likely Bush nomination) means that they are likely to be predisposed
in favor of any action by the Bush family. Add to this that the current White House seems to feel its dignity is insulted
whenever a reasonable question is asked about some Bush policy and you will marvel that there were any votes against
President Bush's choice of Mel Martinez.
