Dear [name],

The Republican Party had a bad night on November 7th for many reasons. Most experts now agree that one thing that hurt Republican candidates most of all was the immigration issue.

Getting our nation's borders under control is a burning issue among the American people. They are tired of bilingual ballots and government offices full of signs in foreign languages.

A majority of Senate Republicans voted against the amnesty for illegal aliens bill, S.2611, and House Republicans stood strong. But because a minority of Republican Senators joined with 38 of 44 Democrats, this bad bill passed the Senate. Amnesty was in the news for most of 2006. The Republican base was not pleased.

Democrat candidates then used the Senate bill to help defeat Republican incumbent Senators in states like Virginia and Missouri. Democratic House candidates defeated their Republican opponents, like J.D. Hayworth, by branding them weak on border security.

Under these circumstances, it does the Republican cause in 2008 no good to have one of the few Republicans leading the fight for the Senate amnesty bill as the new General Chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Senator Mel Martinez has placed himself firmly on the unpopular side when it comes to border security and America's linguistic unity. The Republican Party's problem at this moment is certainly not an oversupply of public support.

Surely, Republican National Committee members like you can agree that the GOP needs a general chairman who divides the opposition and unites the Republican Party. The Martinez nomination does neither.

Should you choose to vote for Senator Martinez as RNC Chairman, expect to see him often on television, fighting with his fellow Republicans on immigration and language matters.

Mel Martinez has an inspiring life story as the immigrant boy who made good. But the Republican Party is not short of other people with equally inspiring life stories.

Please vote against the Martinez nomination. Thank you.

Sincerely,
